FINDING RELEVANT MASTER'S PROGRAMMES

You are uncertain which of our master's programmes might be a good fit for you?

Most of our master's degree programmes are consecutive master's degree programmes. This means that they build on the content of a specific bachelor's degree programme. In the master's programme, the knowledge acquired in the bachelor's programme is then deepened in the direction of a specific specialisation.

Some of our master's degree programmes are interdisciplinary in design and allow applicants from different disciplines to gain access through several different compulsory elective areas. However, depending on the track, the degree programme is also based on certain prior knowledge, which must be proven in the bachelor's degree.

In order to be able to suggest degree programmes to you, we need to know what you have studied beforehand.

Please select the degree programme or field of study that you have studied below. If your degree programme is not explicitly listed, you can check whether a similar degree programme or a subject area overlapping your degree programme is available. You will get the best results if you choose as specifically as possible.

The University of Bayreuth offers master's degree programmes that are taught in German as well as ones that are taught entirely in English. For some degree programmes that are primarily taught in German, English language proficiency is also required. You will be informed whether this is the case on the respective application page.

Environmental changes at any scale, from global to local, are of crucial importance to life on planet Earth. In addition to climate change, the major contemporary challenges include changes in biodiversity, soil degradation, and increases in mass movements. Often the dynamics of such environmental processes require an understanding of the spatial and temporal couplings between the atmosphere, biosphere, relief sphere, pedosphere, and hydrosphere. In addition, the interaction with human activities is of utmost importance. Physical geography – as an interdisciplinary field with a marked focus on the environment-society nexus – is among the core disciplines addressing and examining these environmental changes.

FOOD QUALITY AND SAFETY
Master of Science (M.Sc.)

Language of instruction: English
Aptitude procedure: yes
Minimum grade requirement: 2.5

find out more

Food is fundamentally different from other goods: It consists of (parts of) organisms that were alive or still are. In addition to the higher complexity of its composition and the variation in its starting materials, this results in a greater risk of variability during production, transport, and storage. How do we supply as many people as possible in the most sustainable ways with high-quality, healthy food? You will deal with this and similar questions in the master’s programme "Food Quality and Safety".

The complex world of food is of great importance for many areas of society. The ingredients of food have an immediate impact on human health, while production methods and supply chain management additionally contribute to the health of the environment. Novel food products seek legislation to make the food system more sustainable and healthy. The Food System Sciences Master’s degree course at the University of Bayreuth offers an interdisciplinary programme integrating different aspects of the food system, allowing students to gain insights into the interfaces between Food Chemistry, Human Physiology, Food Law, and the Bioeconomy. This interdisciplinary basis followed by in-depth specializations in one of the food system areas will allow you to make a significant contribution to ensure a sufficient, high quality food supply for the growing world population.

GLOBAL CHANGE ECOLOGY
Master of Science (M.Sc.)

Language of instruction: English
Aptitude procedure: yes
Minimum grade requirement: none

find out more

Earth’s ecosystems are exposed to various rapid environmental changes, such as the global changes of climate, element cycles, land use, and biodiversity. Such changes can threaten ecological services such as the protection against natural hazards, filtration of drinking water, food supply, and other resources. These situations in turn lead to economic, social, and political instability. Such problems of an entirely new and interdisciplinary nature require the establishment of innovative approaches in research and education. A special focus of this program is the linking of natural science perspectives on global change with approaches in social science disciplines.

GLOBAL FOOD, NUTRITION AND HEALTH
Master of Science (M.Sc.)

Language of instruction: English
Aptitude procedure: yes
Minimum grade requirement: 2.5

find out more

From a global perspective, we are far from being able to supply all people with food in such a way that they can lead an active and healthy life. Nutrient deficiency, malnutrition in its tremendous variety as well as planetary, social and cultural determinants to health are serious issues and central challenges of the 21st century. These global health problems are primarily not a request to medicine, but rather to the nutrition and health sciences and to the industry and politics implementing them. At the same time, social science, cultural, sociological and ecological aspects play an important role in the production, trade and consumption of food. It therefore seems imperative to demonstrate the link between the production and supply of sufficient and safe food worldwide ("Food"), between the social and cultural aspects of nutrition (“Nutrition”) and its impact on health (“Health”) in a global context from a scientific and educational point of view.
